A Choral Workshop Experience

             California native and graduate of Fortuna High School, Jonathan Souza received his undergraduate training at Humboldt State University in Arcata California completing his Bachelor of the Arts Degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance.  His graduate studies were completed at San Jose State University School of Music and Dance where he received a Mater of the Arts Degree in Music, Choral Conducting under the mentorship of Dr. Charlene Archibeque.

             Mr. Souza performs professionally across California and has been seen with the American Cabaret Theatre, Mark Morris Dance Company, Humboldt Lift Opera Company, Fortuna Concert Series, and was an assistant conductor of one of America’s renowned chamber choirs, the San Jose State University Choraliers.

             He is an active instructor and clinician of choral music, recently judged the International Championship of collegiate A Cappella Western United States Finals at Stnaford University and was one of the judges at Humboldt State University’s Concerto Aria Competition (2005).

             Currenty, Jonathan is the Director of Music Activities at Fortuna Union High School where he directs both instrumental and choral ensembles.  Additionally, his biographical sketch will be included in the 2007 edition of  “Who’s Who in America.”

             During his studies, Jonathan has worked with renowned choral conductor Dr. Charlene Archibeque, Dr. Harley Muilenburg, Elena Sharkova, among others.  His vocal training has included private instruction from Joseph Frank (of the MET), Dr. James Stanard (HSU, San Francisco Opera) and Dr. David Rohrbaugh (of Opera San Jose).  While as HSU he also played trumpet in all of the major instrumental ensembles including private trumpet instruction from Dr. Gil Cline.  You may contact Jon by emailing him at jon@arcatachoralartists.org.

             Jonathan Souza, Christina Stanard-Souza, and Kevin Sharkey established the Arcata Choral Artists and A Choral Workshop Experience in June of 2005.  Arcata Choral Artists was created for serious singers of Humboldt County to participate in a 2 weeks rehearsal commitment and realize a meaningful music experience through the rehearsal and performance of the choral arts as a choral ensemble.  Singer from ages 14-70 enjoy experiencing a varied repertoire through our rehearsals which culminates in an exciting performance for family, friends, and our community.  Another important part of ACA is the inclusion of some of Humboldt County’s  fine instrumentalists including Nancy Correll, Annette Gurnee-Hull, Greg Granoff, the Klamath String Quartet among others.  Such collaborations only add to the diverse and exciting nature of the experience.  The Arcata Choral Artists and A Choral Workshop Experience is proud to take place among the many fine art organizations in Humboldt County.
